First topic message reminder :

Well, just about a year ago today, I bought a used 55 gallon tank with two light hoods.  It's been sitting empty until now ...

Here's where I've got to so far.  It's leveled up on a sturdy metal stand and tested for leaks.  All is okay!  The substrate is Eco-Complete, fine grade.  Yeah, I splurged! Very Happy

Looks great Deb! Gotta ask, whats the background? The wood matches very well to it mirror.

The background is aluminum foil, cut to fit, then crumpled and flattened out again. It stays in place pretty well and never needs to be changed. I love the "mirror" look - it's enough to reflect the green of the plants but not clear enough to confuse the fish with their own reflections. *lol*

The tank build is progressing well!
It's almost fully planted but I still have some stray Cryptocoryne crowns to plant against the back wall. My decor has some way to go - the large root from DRP needs to be placed but I wanted to get all of the plants in first. Also, there are a couple of big river rocks to place.

Here is the view from the non-HOB end:

The photo will look sharper if you lean back. *lol*

The plants are, from R to L:

Lindernia rotundifolia (tall stem plant in corner)
Cryptocoryne blassii (wide-leaf)
Nymphaea species (red lily bulbs)
Cryptocoryne crispatula "balansae" (the tall crypt at the back glass)
Cryptocoryne wendtii (green and red)

Here are the Red Lily bulbs doing well:

The leaves are arrow-shaped, and do not look like the typical lily pad.

Nice build Deb, looks great!

You mentioned Hillstream Loaches - what else might you be adding?

Thanks, Tracey. Very Happy
Well, here is what has been added so far:
Starting with a few ramshorn snails in February, I next added a few Danio tinwini on March 1. These were from Skoolz of Fish. Cool
After planting the tank I added the two big female red shrimps shortly followed by the one male - all from my 20 long plant nursery. This was followed by various nerite snails, a Betta species, a few more danios, and finally dwarf neon rainbowfish.

Here is the complete stocklist SO FAR:

5 Melanotaenia praecox - dwarf neon rainbowfish
9 Danio tinwini - ocelot danio
2 Betta species juveniles
2 Neritina turrita - zebra nerite snails
2 Neritina turrita - orange track nerite snails
1 Clithon diadema - spiky nerite snail
3 Neocaridina heteropoda - cherry red shrimp, adults
N. heteropoda babies, BIT
Planorba sp. - ramshorn snails, many BIT

Hillstream loaches are definitely in the picture; basically the entire tank was set up for them. The specific loach I want is Sewellia lineolata, for their small size and ease of keeping. In addition, it would be great to have either sidthimunki dwarf loaches I love you OR a smallish Asian catfish. TBD!

So far all is good. From what I have observed of these shrimp, they can hold their own with the smaller fish and stand their ground, especially if they are defending food.

I have many N. heteropoda babies right now, about 3mm long, and even the rainbowfish do not bother them. However, I'm sure larger fish with bigger mouths would try to eat these babies.

Neocaridina heteropoda
This is a somewhat out-of-focus pic of my largest female red cherry shrimp, Cleo. She is huge!

Melanotaenia praecox
After weeks of trying, I was able to get a somewhat okay pic of one of the dwarf neon rainbowfish. They are amazing! This one happened to be hovering in mid-water when I snapped the shot. Lucky shot! The other fish are just blurs, all around him.

There are three dwarf neon rainbowfish doing well.  The others were attacked and killed by the dwarf zebra hovering loaches, Micronemacheilus cruciatus, but things are settled down now.
Here's the story:
http://cvas.forumotion.com/t1175-dwarf-zebra-loaches-attack-neon-rainbowfish

It's a very enjoyable and lively tank.  I'll be adding another species very soon, one that ought to be able to cope with the loaches and do well.  More to follow with pix ...

Looking really great. I laughed about your shrimp holding their own. I was amazed that my Amano's get quite bold with the Angels, Pleco's and Cory's when there is food available. Quite fun and comical to watch

It's a bit grainy but you can see some of the fish in the background.

Do you have a single accent light on the tank?

It looks like the light is coming in through a hole in the surface, which provides for a wonderful effect.

Thanks. Very Happy
The light is one of the lights that came with the original hood.  The fixture is 24" long and the lamp is a 17W, 18", T8 Marineland "natural daylight" bulb.

More pix of this tank can be found here.
