PostSubject: New member - smbane5001 - 50 gal - freshwater - poecilia - planted tank   Tue Sep 24, 2013 12:46 am

Hi,

I live in richmond, va. I have had poecilia all my life. I currently have a planted 50 gallon.

I have one male and one female jumbo swords, one red painted the other striped and spotted rainbow.

5 sapphire blue platies, 2 males 3 females.

1 sad grayish blue female platy

2 female rainbow platies

5 cobra endlers male

8 endler/ guppy cross females

My tank is black sand, with several large pieces of driftwood and plants.

I'm no expert, but I've picked up on a small gap in the local pet shops. No one has sapphire blue platies. So I've been experimenting with breeding the small handful I have. I've had a successful drop of platy fry recently, so far the coloring is black and gray. But I suspect they will turn blue as they age. I have a bunch of fry that aren't gray, different father.  the daddy for them was a sunset platy, he is no longer with us lol. So the only males in the tank are the 2 blue ones. I'm looking forward to seeing what starts popping up.

The swordtail drops regularly, but doesn't have large broods. She has around 4 per month that survive to adulthood. The mother is cannibalistic.. :/

I was raising fry in a net, but I found they developed slowly and tended to be stunted. By planting the tank and allowing them free roam, they have grown quicker and to full size. Well that's about it!

lol!
Or maybe you could learn how to use the features on the camera that you have to more advantage.  That is what I learned from the speaker we heard at the September 22 meeting and now I'm better able to deal with glare.

I know what you mean Sbane, it can be difficult to get good images.

At our last meeting we had a member give a presentation on photo taking (he takes some great aquatic images) and it was really informative....

I'm going to be a lot better at taking pictures of my aquatic friends...

Just switched out my larger piece of driftwood for a smaller multi branched one. I mounted the driftwood on some slate after heat treating it. Then I collected all of the little java fern offshoots that had been collecting on my filter. Using fine, clear fishing line I attached each little java fern to the ends of the driftwood branch. So it looks like the branch is actually alive and the java fern is its leaves. The nice thing about this besides being 100% free. Was that unlike similar plants at Lfs, I can't see the string. The Lfs uses black string, and it's easily seen. So yay

It's beautiful, Sbane! clapping  Great idea and flawless execution!
Have you used the fishing line before?  How do you tie it off and do you heat seal the edges?

You can see the fishing line here. I cut the excess off at the knot when I'm done, so you can't see it. I don't know how to heat seal the knot. So what I do is triple knots.

You cant see the line in this one, since I've finished and cut off the excess.

In a couple months, the java should have grown to around double in size. So it will look even better.

Just added two rummy nose yesterday and then five more today to the tank. LOVE them! I got the first two from petco and the rest from skoolz of fish.
I would add a pic, but they are racing around the tank so quick they are a blur on my camera.

Btw, does anyone want a couple rainbow platies? Or my swordtails?... I've been trying to get rid of them. If anyone wants to trade for some plants on Friday, I would be interested in low light plants.
