PostSubject: Breeding speckled blue MM platy   Mon Oct 07, 2013 12:39 am

If you have read my article on the poecilia family of live bearers. Then you know the females can store sperm from males for months! This can complicate breeding, since the female has to get out the old stuff before getting to the new stuff.

I had removed the undesired males from my tank over 3 months ago! The last 2 batches of fry was a mix batch of undesirable fry. However the latest batch was all blue! :DI can now officially start working on my speckled blue platy strain! I will try and update this post with pictures once these fry are a little older.

So this strain I have going. Currently have a white background that fade to blue as it blends in with a dark blue mm pattern. This coloring is then overlaid with speckling of lighter and darker scales. This is what creates the speckled mm platy trademark look. The overlaying and multi colored scales creates a unique effect to the color of the fish. No what what lighting the fish is under it will look blue. But depending on light and angle, color ranges can be aqua to sapphire blue. Please see another post I have on this same thread that shows the color spectrum.

The fish shape itself is the standard southern platy fish shape. I eventually want to get my hands on a silver wag to interbreed into my stock. But for now, they are doing good genetically. They are sensitive to water perameters. The first to show stress if the tank is out of whack. How ever they seem to be resistant to infections in general, infections such as ick, fungal infections and fin rot. So in general I think that their good genetics make them a better fish than you can normaly get at the store.

P.s the undesirable are actually pretty. I don't understand how a red wag platy + a blue platy = a red painted platy....Shocked if anyone is interested in them let me know.

Congrats on the Blue fry. That holding on to sperm thing can be a pest. I have an old Guppy line that I'm working and I still get surprises... Amazing but fun... Enjoy!!!

So as talked about in another post, some fish are sick including the blue speckled mm platies. If they die, it would be devastating.

They are clear with speckling at the moment, and itty bitty. I've moved them to the net so I can feed them and only them 3x a day. :/ hopefully they all live.

Fingers crossed for your fry survival as well as the parents improvements.

Real great to hear of your spawns......

parents all either healed completely or almost. The babies have started growing, I've been feeding them 3 times daily with color enhancing flake food. I've got in the net with them some anacharis, water wysteria and some small java moss sprouts. I want them to double in size before I release them back into the main tank.

This is actually a good picture to show color. The fish thatare in direct natural sunlight appear an aqua marine, while fish in normal tank lighting appear saphire speckled.

Depending on light source, Color displays are as shown in this picture.

Good blue platies are great looking fish. I like that yours still look basically like natural fish, not like some those over-enhanced hybrids with ridiculous colors.

In this picture you can see one of the fry in the top middle section of the screen, it's a out 3/4 an inch at the moment.

I gotta clean the algae off the glass, it's hard to see him. They are just so small still.

When I type into google, "blue speckled mm platy" this article is the top link.

Here is a picture showing them in the darkest part of the tank with light from tv tv shining on them. It makes them "glow".
