These are truly outstanding photos!  Do they actually attack each other violently? What happens to the "loser"?

They are pretty fiesty right now (too many males in the tank). There's some lip-locking and some serious fin flaring while the other either backs down or goes after the exposed flank. So far there hasn't been a real loser that has been too beaten up, but that could happen down the line. It's amazing how these fish can change color. They can go from silver/tan to completely colored up like the pictures above in a minute or two. Usually the non-dominant male won't be as colored and might try to mimic a female to reduce aggression. At the moment those two males are staked out with each owning half the tank. Another tough, smaller male still colors up and tries to make a move. The last two generally stay muted and out of the way.

I also have 1 male and (hopefully) 4 female Paralabidochromis chromogynos in the tank. They can be aggressive as well at times but look different enough than the fulus so there isn't a big threat of cross-breeding. Finally, there is a trio of peacocks (fry from my F1 parents - roughly 1.5-2" long) and an albino bristlenose pleco. Quite the community!

Here's a pic of the male Paralabidochromis chromogynos having a stare down with one of the male Xystichromis phytophagus.  Sorry the glass was a little dirty and the lighting kind of meh.  The blues in the chromogynos don't really show up well.

Those fulus are beautiful. It really amazes me watching the males fight for dominance. The coloring on the males some times is more intense than when they are breeding.

The colors are definitely amazing. It's quite the community, as you say. Is the tank fully stocked?

It's fully loaded. Eventually I hope to swap out some of the male fulus for some females to get the balance right. I only have one female (holding for the first time) at the moment so I'm going to need to either grow out those potential fry or get some other females from a known source. I'm pretty picky because I want a line that is CARES registered, so I only know of 2 or 3 sources right now (all originating from Greg Steeves). I was bummed that my 8 grow outs ended up being 7M and 1F.
