Anyone have an idea what this little fellow is?
The little silver fish nearly dead center of photo was accidently netted when I bought the Rummynose Tetra's from Rama 3 or 4 months ago. I had not noticed he was different until adding to my tank that he is not a Rummy. He hangs with them though and is always right in the middle of the school. They all get along great and seem to be "buds" The pic does not show great as like the Rummy's always on the move and VERY hard to get a good clear photo. No real coloration to speak of almost a silver with just a hint of green. Body size similar to the Rummys with perhaps a little more football shaped. He has a black horizontal line on his side from mid point of body extending to the tail.

Definitely not a Gold Tetra, although one of the one's I first thought of. He/she resembles more a Hyphessobryon Scholzei "BlackLine Tetra", or Astyanox Mexicanus "Mexican Astyanox"

To me it looks like a female silver tip tetra, Hasemania nana. That species is usually not so uniformly silver in color, but some specimens are more drab like the one in the pic. It may be the light substrate but silver tips have, naturally, silver tips on their dorsals and pectorals that I don't really see in the pic. They sport the same central black area in the tail.

Maybe post the pic on Rama's FB page and he might be able to tell you.

Definitely not a Dawn Tetra, no black in fins. No color in them actually. Certainly not a Head and Tail Light completely different body shape. This guy is shaped more like a Cardinal and or like a Rummynose, but a little thicker and a little larger than a Rummy in length.
I will send a pick to Ramma to see if he can remember what was in the tank when he sold to me.

Ron, here is something that might help narrow it down.  Yesterday, I was in the Lakeside Fin & Feather and saw this very same phenomenon as yours in one of their tanks - a large-ish group of rummy nose with one of your mystery tetras in the middle, swimming with them.  I kept my eye on the tank for some time and they never altered.

This makes me wonder if this little mystery fish is a tetra that is normally found in the same area as rummy-noses are collected, making it a normal and occasional by-catch.

With two different locations sporting this same combination, it seems likely.

I also vote Gold tetra.

If you Google image gold tetra, its the closest resemblance by far. Could also be coloration issues due to stress or health.

I agree with Deb - it's probably not any of the intentionally-imported species. It looks like one of the many, many species of accidental imports that often school together with the commercially targeted species, and have no common name. I'd guess a Hemigrammus species, but to ID it you'll need to go to the scientific literature, not aquarium hobby literature or websites. As hobbyists it's easy to forget that the wild species targeted by collectors are just a tiny fraction of all the species out there in the rivers (especially true for S.Amer characins and Asian cyprinids and loaches).
