PostSubject: My birthday present   Fri May 09, 2014 5:44 pm

So this week I got the best birthday present ever, and "upgraded" my Oscar in the process. It's a 90 gallon corner bowfront tank:

Oscar loving his new home  fish  We plan on swapping out that reef background for something solid colored to showcase him even more.

The best (and most unique) part of this tank is what's underneath. The woman I bought it from was very much into DIY and she decided to make her own filter rather than spend hundreds. It's just a set of cheap plastic office drawers, connected via a pipe with built-in shutoff valve (in case of emergency) to the tank's overflow. Each drawer has holes drilled into the bottom and contains different filter media. When it's time to change media, simply open the drawer and swap out! It's a brilliant idea and super easy to maintain.

(the brick is to weigh down the filter so it doesn't float away in the sump lol) We still have some work to do since I'm not really happy with where all the chords had to be located- too close to the water for my liking. I may need to switch to a smaller sump tank so there's more room to maneuver underneath and I can get those chords further away from water.

Still, can't beat it for the price: $350 for the tank, stand, filter, light, and various other fish-related odds and ends. It's always great to meet friendly fish people who just want to see their tanks go to loving homes. Smile

Awesome! Happy B-day! I would tr a black or blue background. It makes the Oscar color pop.

Congrats and  Bday !!!
I couldn't help but to notice that drum throne in the background. Is there a drummer in the house?

Great buy and gift. I really love those style tanks. Your Oscar looks great in there.

Happy Birthday, Sarah, queen and congrats on a great buy!  Interesting DIY underneath - hope it continues to work well for you.  A big corner tank is always a delight to the eye!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes guys.

And JohnnyAMH my fiance used to be a drummer, but he gradually traded in his drum set for various guitars/amps/music equipment over the years. We've since kept "the throne" for a quick seat while doing maintenance under our tanks. Works great! Wink
