From Dennis Bragg:

We will be holding our regular November 2015 James River Aquarium Society Monthly Meeting, Wednesday,November 18th at 7:00 PM at the Department of Game and Inland fisheries (DGIF’s), new facility located at 7870 Villa Park Drive, Henrico, VA 23228. Note: This meeting is on the 3rd Wednesday of November, one week earlier than our normal fourth Wednesday, so as not to interfere with Thanksgiving holiday plans for many of us.

DGIF is in Suite 400 and the DGIF Board Room’s after hours’ entry door is easily visible from the parking lot in the front of the building. Any questions contact Dennis Bragg, Cell/Text: (804) 690-2152.

About our Program: "Plain Old Goldfish: Unusual and Rare Varieties in America".

Dr. Rhodes will be discussing some of the more rare and unusual goldfish breeds that the general public may not be aware of in the US including the Veiltail, Bubble-eye, and the Izumo Nankin.

About our Program Speaker:
Dr. Bryan Rhodes is a Virginia native who has been seriously breeding goldfish for approximately 10 years.

After returning from New Zealand where he studied for his PhD in Zoology, he became interested in raising rarer breeds of goldfish such as Veiltail and Bubble-eye. He currently teaches biology at Reynolds Community College and organizes a goldfish show for the American Goldfish Association each fall in Richmond. This year's AGA Virginia Show was held at J Sergeant Reynolds Community College on Saturday, November 14.

About This Month’s Meeting:
There will be a prize drawing at this meeting for members that will include three $10 gift certificates, one to Skoolzoffish, one to PetSmart, and one to another local fish store!  Pay your dues for 2016 and be eligible for the drawing! See Tom and Chuck for details. The JRAS Membership Committee will be at DGIF a few minutes early for those who want to pay their dues for a 2016 Membership and be eligible for the prize drawing at this meeting.

JRAS Monthly Pre-Meeting Dinner Gathering at Frida’s Mexican Restaurant:
As usual, we will again be inviting our guest speaker out to dine with us at 5:30 pm and paying for their meal just before our Wednesday Monthly Membership Meeting. We usually host a group of JRAS attendees / hungry diners between 5:30 and 6 pm to socialize / eat with our speaker to get to know them a little better. We have had nine people show up at Frida’s in the past. Frida’s Mexican Restaurant is located very near our meeting site at 910 East Parham Road, Richmond, VA23228. Join us if you can -- we always have fun, and the food is inexpensive and very good! For more than a few of us it is the only way that we can eat before arriving at our 7 pm meeting as many of us are coming directly from work or would rather not go home before coming to the meeting.

JRAS Future Monthly Meeting Programs:
Our Annual Holiday Party will be held on the 3rd Friday in December, December 18th, to avoid interfering with the usual activities around the Christmas holiday season.

The following program topics will be given during 2016: “New World Cichlids,” “Rare Cryptocorynes,” “Ecology of the Planted Aquarium” (Diana Walstad!), “Fish Behavior,” “Fish Aggression,” and a specialty topic on Goldfish. We will also highly likely hold our October 2106 meeting on the third Wednesday of the month so that Michael Barber can bring down a really high-end, world renowned speaker on Catfish to coincide with the huge CatCon meeting in Northern, VA. Should you know of any other topics, please let us know. We are always on the lookout for great program topics and speakers!

Note: All of our regular monthly meetings start at 7:00 PM and are held at the Department of Game and Inland fisheries’ (DGIF’s) facility located at 7870 Villa Park Drive, Henrico, VA 23228. DGIF is in Suite 400. The DGIF Board Room’s after hour’s entry door is easily visible from the parking lot in the front of the building.

About This Month’s Monthly JRAS Auction:

Don’t forget to bring your donation items for the auction or for raffle items, if you have any to spare. Items for our monthly auction are usually spare plants, fish, fish food, driftwood, corals, live rock, and/or hard goods that you would like to donate. Note: There will be worm cultures available at this auction. Thus far, we have had almost all profits for our monthly auctions go to JRAS to pay for internal organization cost, speaker fees, etc. For individuals bringing in fish or plants, make sure that you bring as much detail on the species of fish or plant as possible.

Note: Our James River Aquarium Society Facebook page is found at: https://www.facebook.com/JRASVirginia, and our JRAS Website is located at: http://www.jras.org. Our website forum should be available within the next month or so!

Questions:  Please direct any questions to Dennis Bragg: Cell/Text: (804) 690-2152 / roovle@gmail.com, or Scott Cox, Cell/Text: (804) 539-5360, wsc.3@comcast.net, for the JRAS meeting. We hope to see you soon. Mailing address: James River Aquarium Society (JRAS), 5409 Falmouth Street, Richmond, VA 23230.

Hope to see you all at DGIF for Dr. Rhodes "Plain Old Goldfish: Unusual and Rare Varieties in America" presentation this Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM!
