March 2016 James River Aquarium Society
Monthly Meeting Wednesday,
March 30th at 7:00 PM at the Department of Game and Inland fisheries (DGIF’s) facility located at 7870 Villa Park Drive, Henrico, VA 23228.,

About this month’s Speaker and Program: “How to Collect, Keep and Breed Native Killifish!”
http://www.nanfa.org/admin/photos/bock.jpg

Bob (Robert) Bock, Kensington, MD, a Writer-Editor for the Office of Communications of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, is a past president of the North American Native Fishes Association (NANFA) and a member of all the DC area aquarium clubs, including PVAS and CCA.

Bob has been collecting and keeping fish since the age of 7, when he brought two Mummichog home from the Hackensack River meadowlands in New Jersey, and where he collected native sunfish, killies and catfish in local park lakes.

Bob has organized numerous native fish collecting trips, and likes writing and speaking about aquarium fish and aquarium-related topics. He has contributed articles to Tropical Fish Hobbyist and was co-editor of NANFA’s main periodical, American Currents. He is also very active in writing articles for other aquarium hobby publications and has a particular interest in writing columns on native fishes for beginners. These “native fishes for the beginner” articles periodically appear in American Currents, and in aquarium club magazines around the country. Bob is trained in public relations, and spends a lot of his free time trying to let the public know about native fish in general, and NANFA in particular. A few years ago, he served as a spokesperson for NANFA on the plans to eradicate introduced snakehead found in a pond in Maryland. He commented on the topic for national and local media, and tried his best to make the best of a bad situation by underscoring the dangers of releasing captive species into the wild. [See Native Fish Photos at the end of this newsletter!]

In addition to killifish, Bob has kept and bred numerous native and non-native species, including catfish, cichlids, loaches, livebearers, cyprinids, and sunfish, and has collected fish in the Florida Everglades, the mountains of West Virginia, the creeks of Tennessee and Ohio, the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, and the North Carolina Coast. Bob has observed numerous species of both freshwater and marine fish in his home aquariums. His greatest interest is in the Lepomis sunfish and the sailfin mollies of the Southeastern U.S. and Mexico. Bob operates the aquarium hobby blog, Sonny’s Fish Room (http://www.sonnysfishroom.com/).

Bob will bring to us his collection techniques, tips, breeding and husbandry methods and anecdotes from his knowledge and experience with collecting, keeping, and breeding North American Native Killifish- a rare treat for all interested in keeping and breeding native fish and native killifish in particular.

If you have a strong interest in native fish and / or killifish THIS IS A PRESENTATION YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS!

About This Month’s Meeting
As usual, there will be a prize drawing at this meeting for our members. See Chuck McClung, Membership Chair, for details. The JRAS Membership Committee is usually at our meeting a few minutes early for those who want to pay their dues for a 2016 Membership and be eligible for the prize drawing at this meeting.

JRAS Monthly Pre-Meeting Dinner Gathering at Frida’s Mexican Restaurant
As usual, we will again be inviting all our members to dine with us at 5:30 pm just before our Wednesday Monthly Membership Meeting. We usually have a group of JRAS attendees / hungry diners between 5:30 and 6 pm to socialize / eat with our speaker to get to know them a little better and Bock Bock is a HUGE fan of Mexican / Guatemalan food! We have had as many as nine people show up at Frida’s in the past. Frida’s Mexican Restaurant is located very near our meeting site at 910 East Parham Road, Richmond, VA23228. Join us if you can -- we always have fun, and the food is inexpensive and very good! For more than a few of us it is the only way that we can eat before arriving at our 7 pm meeting as many of us are coming directly from work or would rather not go home before coming to the meeting.
