This came out recently in the news, and I know it to be true in my own experience. My SA tank with geophagus and angels definitely get excited and cluster at the surface in an active group when people approach the tank, but they begin this excitement when I rise from the sofa in the next room, lol. Not when other members of the family rise from the sofa, however, since I am the only one who feeds them.

This is even more noticeable with my SA puffer, Otis, who gets excited when anyone passes his tank, but he is downright frantic when I enter the room, since I am the only one who feeds him. There is no question that my fish recognize me, specifically. It should surprise no one - fish aren't plants, after all, and they need to be able to recognize predators, territories, food sources, mates, etc., so why not human food sources?

I am raising animals and fishes more than 30+ years and I seen all can recognize faces. The only one I was not sure is gold fish and guppies Smile

My wild altums also recognize my family and they get exited when we are around the tank. But if guests are near they dont show any response. Smile
