PostSubject: College Student Fish Enthusiast   Sun Mar 05, 2017 6:34 pm

Hi,

My name is Leela Hamm and I'm a college student. It's hard to find other college students who are into fish keeping like me and I rely on advice from older people who have 100gal tanks. I really like this website so far because of the fish photo ratings!
Being a college student, I don't have excessive amounts of money to pour into my aquarium hobbies so I've gotten fish/invertabrets from Petco and PetSmart since freshman year. My family has always had insects or reptiles so I always knew getting one dog and dying wouldn't be my life... bounce

I have a 10 gal tank with a mix of sand and gravel for: bowl
-Joaquin: (M) Veil-tail Betta (2 years) fish
A highly aggressive betta who actually gets along with all of his tank mates very well.
-Juan: Albino Cory Catfish fish
A fat little peach fish who needs to go on a diet and is very hyperactive.
-Jem: (F) African Dwarf Frog (1 year) alien
A medium sized frog who likes me very much.
-Jean-Pierre: (M) African Dwarf Frog alien
A tiny pale frog who jumps around endlessly.
-Algae: Ghost Shrimp (1 year) affraid
A rather big fairy who is tainted by PetSmart water and thusly named Algae. Very durable.
-Santa Clara: Gold Inca Snail (1 week) sunny
The prettiest quarter size tank addition ever. So fun to watch.
-San Jose: Black Mystery Snail (1 week) sunny
A scared snail who is constantly in hiding but still watching...

I'd like to know more about catfish diets, Betta fish aggression and shrimp habitats. My ideal tank would be a saltwater tank but I do not have the money (or time) to support that at the moment.
So hello and I'm happy to be here!

Welcome Leela. Cory catfish usually eat most tropical fish foods: flakes, small pellets, live or frozen brine shrimp, live or frozen worms (blackworms, bloodworms, glassworms), chopped earthworms, bits of fresh shrimp, peas, mosquito larvae ... Other kinds of catfish of course have different diets ...
I've found ghost shrimp to be rather poor algae eaters; they really prefer meaty foods. Cherry, Bee, and Amano shrimp are more useful for that purpose.

Not sure where in "Jersey" you are, but this weekend has some big fishy events you might want to drop in at if you're free: The Northeast Council Of Aquarium Societies annual convention in CT, and Capital Cichlids' Big Fish Deal in MD. Also the Raleigh Aquarium Soc convention, but that's a long haul from Jersey.
