Here is a picture of my other new pleco. He just moved into the 180 so he is a bit lighter than normal. He is about 6 or 7 inches.

Baryancistrus sp. (L081) (Gold nugget pleco)

Ben, I took the "liberty" of posting your pic above for positive ID on Planet Catfish. Will post here when ID is determined.

If it is Baryancistrus xanthellus, as I suspect, then this is the agreed on way to determine sex:
Dimorphism - that is, the difference between male and female - is difficult to notice unless the fish are at full breeding size. In many suckermouth catfish species, this seems to be at two thirds (or more) of the expected adult size. Males have a flatter, more leveled slope to their foreheads and are slightly wider across the head. Females have a more rounded forehead and are slightly plumper at the mid body when in spawning condition. There is no noticeable difference in odontodal growth in either gender. Which is interesting because in clown plecos, for example, the odontodal growth is what sets the males apart. Anyway, maybe this information will help you especially if you come across a group, where the differences will be easier to spot.

As you and I discussed already, there are basically two catfish species known as gold nugget plecos. Yours is definitely one of them. If it's Baryancistrus xanthellus, then it will grow to 14" or so and is at about half its adult length now. They grow slowly, from all accounts, so it could be a while before you know.

If, OTOH, it's an L081 species, you are in better shape. L081 is represented by three catfish which look about the same, except for changes in the dots. Your catfish shown above has nice, tight, even dots. This is supposed to correspond to longevity and health, so that is good news.

So far, folks are leaning towards your catfish being in the L081 "group." The significance of that, of course, is that the fish is most likely full grown or near enough to get a proper ID of male or female.

Of course, venting is an option. I was able to ID my Panaque maccus females by that method because I saw them on the glass. You may never get the chance to see the vent. However some of the other sex ID keys above may help.

Baryancistrus of the gold nugget type DO NOT like each other. They are argumentative and territorial with other fish and EXTREMELY so with each other. For this reason, you might want to be sure you have the opposite sex individual before you add another one to that set-up. Although, 180 gallons is a pretty big tank so maybe you could have three or so of the 7" size but this is the sort of thing you won't know until you try!

Plecos are the bom as I have been saying for years. *lol*

Ben if you will get a dorsal shot, top down, and tell me the exact length of your gold nugget - in cm if possible - I can probably find out if it's male or female. It would be interesting to know.

Great ventral shot, btw!
Very Happy

Still working on the shot for you Ancistra'. Very tough to get a straight down shot in this tank. I was able to get the measurment which is 15cm. Will hopefully get the shot soon.
