PostSubject: Emergency! Fish randomly dieing!   Tue Mar 13, 2012 6:09 pm

Ok so I have a 55 gallon fully cycled tank that has recently had some major issues. I went to my LFS after doing my own testing to double check and everything was fine. Perfect setup for tetras and angelfish. The stock is 4 clownfish, 2 corydoras, 2 3 inch plecos, 1 flame tetra, 1 glolight tetra, and about 20 neon tetras. I started noticing the neons were dieting and coughed it up to breeding since the levels were perfect. I got 2 angels and just lost them. The loaches nor corys are showing any signs of sickness or disease. I use Prime and nothing else with the water. I put melafix in the water and it did nothing. I'm worried about this. We haven't had any issues since we first started keeping fish 2 years ago. Could I please get some help? Question Question Question Question Question Question Question

Thank you,
Ericka

Need more info:

How long has the tank been fully cycled, and what were the major issues?

Have you done a PWC recently?

What specifically are the parameters for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

pH of the tank versus the tap water/PWC source water?

Am planning on another water change tonight. Tap pH is 7.2 average and the tank is at 7.0. I don't remember exactly how long the tank has been fully cycled but I do do have a lot of green algae if that helps. All parameters are reading 0 but nitrate was at 1. The major issues is the tetras and angelfish are dieing. They look like they have marks and fin tearing from a fight.

Hmm, other than the neons not eating, does the fish breathing look labored?

Have you noticed any red sores on the dead fish? Any nipping from other fish?

Maybe just sit and watch how the fish interact with each other. It's plausible the angles were just stressed to death from being chased.

That's what I do all day is watch them. The loaches and corys are funny. They weren't chased intact they did the chasing when the tetras got to close. Now everything seems fine.

Did ya happen to add any new fish to the tank without changing everything around in the tank?? Could they have been fighting over territory??

So am I understanding that you have lost 2 angels, and that's it, or are neons dying too?

Established tank, added new fish and only the new fish died?

Haha! I would believe that but the tank is about 4 feet off the ground. And I just lost my peppered Corydora so loaches, plecos and the albino Cory are in our hospital tank being treated and the tetras have the tank to themselves while they are being treated.

Liz, neons, Angels, and 1 Corydora. New and old are both being affected.

Something is for sure going on but I can't imagine what it is. Yikes.

I lost all of the inhabitants in my 180g one day in a matter of hours, and I don't know why, though I suspect an overdose of Prime may have done it. I don't think I'll ever know, though, since they didn't have any wounds or visible symptoms.

This is a tragedy! I wish I could help figure something out. Sad

Well if we continue to lose neons, we are going to look at new homes for them. This has been going on for a month total and don't want the fish to suffer.

Neons are notoriously sensitive fish, and I've pretty much stopped keeping them out of frustration in how poorly they tend to do, so it may not have anything at all to do with what you are doing. However, the other deaths indicate something is going on. I'd do a lot of small water changes to reduce the effects of any waterborne cause.

Keep us posted-

Will do. Hubby is really wanting to dismantle it and go salt so I think I'll let him.
