PostSubject: Trip to Animal Jungle   Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:23 pm

Ok I went Aj today to just look around and took some pics. My girlfriend loves catfish but I don't have good luck with them so I steer clear. Anyways she hates plecos and I love them. She went to animal jungle today and got me two rhino plecos and really got into the ones she saw. So here are the ones she liked.

This one I forgot to take a picture of the tag but it was like almost $300. Nice looking pleco.
Pardon the horrible pics they were snapped off my phone .

She has good taste right there. I looked at those same plecos when I was down there. The last one I can't remember the name either but I sure remember the price.

Whenever I go I'm always impressed at how they use L numbers when they can, which makes choosing so much easier, assuming their L-number is the correct one. Very nice choices for someone who doesn't like plecos! Laughing

I believe the last one is Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps, also called a "gibby," one of the sailfin plecos.
They can grow to about 18" long and may live for 20+ years. I'm surprised to hear the price tag was $300. How big was it?

Common name: Medusa pleco. Because they are just about the bushiest bristlenose there is. I love you

This A. ranunculus is most likely a female, IMO. See how wide she is across the head and the distribution of bristles is right for the female of this species, too. They are not that common in the hobby. So, did you buy any of the ones she liked?
Very Happy

That pleco was at least a foot and with its dorsal fin up it was close to six inches tall. I did not purchase any of the plecos since she got two rhino plecos
(Be-Bop&RockSteady). From what I read they get big too.

Just FYI - the rhino pleco is Pterygoplichthys scrophus, so another big "ptery." If they are in a big tank that should be okay. They are very amiable. I've seen them being groomed by gouramis! Laughing

Ancistra, I don't know what the pleco is that they have labeled a gold spot ancistrus. I went to do some research on this fat lump of a pleco and found nothing remotely resembling it under that name.

I also am now concerned with its stomache...it is very fat, and they said its supposed to look like that, but I cant find anywhere online that says that its normal for a pleco to have a fat waddly stomache. After spending 100 on this fish with no gauruntee, I'm wondering if I got ripped off.

Jen, I was looking into the ID when I saw your latest post. Sorry to hear this. If he's as distended as it sounds, try offering him a slice of zucchini or even cucumber. He might be a bit constipated from eating the wrong foods and the roughage will clear out his intestines.

Another possibility is that he's full of parasites, but I hope that's not it. Try the vegetables and see how he does.

The photos are not very clear - is he definitely a bristlenose in your opinion?
Does he have a white seam on the dorsal and the caudal?
If NOT, then he might be Ancistrus sp. (107).
Very Happy

Because the photo is so unclear, there is also the possibility that your fish is NOT a bristlenose (Ancistrus species catfish) but a Baryancistrus species catfish known as a gold nugget. The gold nuggets have a yellow seam on the dorsal and caudal fins and NO bristles.

Another possibility is Hypancistrus sp. (L201) which is a relatively small pleco at under 5". Sometimes this fish is called a gold spot.

I will go to the store today to get some zucchini, thanks for the info Ancistra! It is much appreciated. We also have a gold nugget that we need to get a positive Id on.

This fish I believe is a hypancistrus. No bristles and very dark black with very white spots. I will try and pull him/her out to get a better pic of the belly tonight. Thanks!

A better pic will be welcome - of the belly and of the top side.

Let me know how long the fish is AND if there is a little spike on the top of its head, behind the eyes.

If the fish is much more than 5" and has the spike then it might be L240.

The fish does not have that little spike behind the eye and as you can see its right at 5 inches. it does have little hairs across the body.We blanched organic zucchini and fed the tank. The lights have been out since we got them home. I hope all goes well with this one, Jen really likes it. Suspect
