PostSubject: I don't understand growth rate of fry.   Tue Apr 24, 2012 9:20 pm

For some reason the few fry that I have left in the main tank with the mom & dad (about 30) are 3 times larger then any of the fry that are in the 30 long by themselves. I am feeding them enough, but I just don't understand how that can be. scratch

Are you feeding often enough?

I know when I have an runaway in my main tank he does grow faster, but not 3x faster! Usually they are just a hair larger. I choked mine up to more food available despite how often I feed the fry tank, the main always has some fall into the nooks of the rocks and plenty of grazing opportunities.

The more fish you keep in a grow out tank the more and larger water chages you have to do.If you have one fish per gal you should do at lest 59% twice a week.Feed three time a day.

I have asked myself the same thing scratch . I also heard of the fry feeding off the slim coat of the parents, maybe that has something to do with it.

thanks these are all some great ideas. normally my fish have babies behind the rocks and i really dont see all of this stuff going on till they come out here and there to get some food or move to a better spot. but these guys are all out in the open in the front corner of the tank, and i get to see them all the time. when the FH and the TC are the biggest and baddest things in the tank, the rest of them want to stay far away from them. the mother, (Texas Cichlid) she aint playing. She is protecting her babies to the fullest.

Maybe "mama knows best" and is providing something to the babies in her care that the ones in the 30 long are not getting? I don't have literature to cite here but who knows? It would be an interesting experiment.

Otherwise there may be parameters of the water in the main tank that are outside the usual array of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, GH, KH, pH etc that make that tank more hospitable to the fry than what's going on in the 30. Very interesting observations, though, kool.

The fry look good koolaid. You may need to remove the rest if you want to keep them. If not it should keep the two from spawning a little bit longer. So how did you determine the sex of the fish?

Thanks Flippercon. I have been trying to figure out if I was going to take them and put them in with the rest of there bro. and sis. in the 30 long. As for determining the sex of the fish, I was able to see the tube on the under belly of the Texas. And I took a few pics and a few people told me what to look out for.
