PostSubject: what to do with new tank ?   Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:19 am

My awesome wife got me a 6ft long 125 gallon tank I am picking up on friday
( fathers day gift). I have always liked the black light look I see in some pics but
does the black light afect the fish in a bad way ? i plan on useing the light at when sleeping and i no it cant be good for people if they spent every night under a black light( at least i think so) so would it hurt the fish :cyclops:

Let's hear it for awesome wives! cheers

The only thing I know about black light is that they have a lot of UV without visible light. I'm not sure how that will affect the fish or the tank long-term, but if you have fluorescent lighting on them during the day they may need a break from the UV, like they'd get in nature at night. This is not hard science but is just my best guess.

How about trying an actinic bulb?

EDIT: actinic lights ARE a type of black light, so they emit UV and that's what they're used for in reef setups, if I understand correctly. I think I'd go with the blue LED moonlights if you're going for a moody night-time effect.

+1 Cool
I have the LEDs from marineland on my 125 and love the lunar setting. If your tank is tempered they can not see you with the lunars on and all lights off in a room. Its pretty neat.
Now the the question of the day....
What are you going to stock it with Question

well thanks for info I will more likely go with the L.E.D moon light
not sure what im going to put in but I am 75% sure of putting in a maiting pair of electric blue jack dempsey
with an albino bristle nose placo

i have always wanted an oscar also but i dont think they will do well together I want a active tank so im going to keep doing some more research to see what else i can put in there with them i no my wife wants me to move some of our Jewel Cichlid (we have six in a 55 gal tank with like 4 or 5 other cichlids ) so i would love any suggestions I love cichlids and i want a lively tank and my wife and i really like the electric blues thanks for the help

You just want 2 ebjds right? A breeding pair of ebjd will produce nothing but stress. 2 ebjd would be ok or even 4. They are very mild mannered. Look into boita or loaches.

They have a bunch at animal jungle right now. Don't give up. The warmer months are here so the fish shipment is booming.

To answer for Flip Animal Jungle is in Virginia Beach, and is well worth the drive, IMO. It might be worth it to go there and see all that they have, especially this time of year where the stock will be more varied, and maybe you'll be inspired and get a solid concept of what you want to put in the tank. I've been inspired many a time after a visit to AJ!

If you get a wolf fish (Hoplias malabaricus, I think then it may be the only fish in the tank, which has its merit. Sometimes I think about keeping a very large tank with one tankbuster of a fish in it.

You have so many options, and for me the planning is just as fun as the finished product.

Dude you can instant cycle the tank. Take your filters and fish and move it to the new tank. No cycle time. If you are keeping both tanks you can take some established media from your filter and put it in the new filter. No reason to cycle a tank if you can skip it, unless you want to wait
