Thanks Bigvince for sharing that video. I would say Flippercon is the man to really ask about the DIY filter. I have see a few of those that he made, and they work Great.

I am looking at the DIY Canister Filter, and I think I would love to try and build one of those for my tank. That is so awesome!!! But of course I would have to consult with Flippercon, aka MacGyver first.

Yea that dude makes some very effective equipment for fish tanks , check out his other videos good stuff. I was thinking of doing his canister filter also in the future. Flipped showed me how to make a filter out of a soda bottle, filter media ,air pump and some gravel worked good just ugly but effective Smile

You can't go wrong with Uaru Joey! He is the most subscribed to fish channel on Youtube and is "The King of DIY". I have used a lot of his ideas to fit my needs and what I had.

Not at all. K1 moving bed filters are good for biological filtration. You are going to want to partner up a really good mechanical filter. If you had a sump with one of these in there it would work . Remember with cichlids you want anywhere from 5-10x over volume for filtration.

I am a big fan of the K1 media but have never purchased any since you always have to buy so much. Do you think you'll be selling off some of what you're getting, Vince? I'm assuming you had to purchase a large quantity.

If so, you could portion it out by the liter and bring it to our next meeting, and sell some of your extra. I'd certainly be interested in some. I'd like to use it in a small ancillary filter (similar to the DIY one above) on the 150 to maintain biobugs that can be transferred to new tanks.

It is worth a shot but make sure there are fail safes. If you spring a leak your looking at how deep it sits relative to the tanks water. DIY come with a lot of risk and reward. Have you commented on the video and asked how its been working?

actually i havent asked i have read his comments he has and he was saying it was the clearest he has ever had it useing that method. I am going to be makeing a smaller version for my 10 gal fry tank see how it does for a couple of weeks . then i will try the bigger version , I will keep my regular canister i have been using in place still and just plug it in if it seems to be failing .

I actually have no issues with what i use now my water in my 55 gal is always crysal clear but just trying to find a less expensive method Cool

My 125 gal when i first set it up had pproblems but now its crystal clear

You know I have seen a few people on YouTube use old hobs that have burnt up motors this way. I would just make sure to take pressure off the bulkheads or any fittings that water runs through. If you just buy a reactor and cram it with poly-fil you get the same results. Just a few thoughts......
