I visited KG Tropicals a few weeks ago and was floored when i saw the amount of tanks in their garage, 4 tier tank racks all the way to the cieling pretty impressive. one can also see the quality of stock you are buying as his breeders are in the same room. Also John took the time to walk me through all the tanks and answer any questions. Never thought i would see a setup like this so close to home.

I've been thinking about a few new additions for my Peacock/Hap set up....

That lead me to the website of a CVAS forum sponsor kgtropicals, whom I've purchased some great fish from in the past.

On the website it states that John and the folks at KGT are moving their operation to a new location still in the beautiful county of King George.

John - let us know when you officially open your doors, I want to come see your new place and pick out some new "Malawians" for the holidays!

Very Happy

Hey everyone,
So its been a while since I've signed on, if you have followed me at all you know exactly why I haven't been on here much. Lisa and I have been working non stop for the last couple of months getting our new location set up. The store is ready (well close enough), the fish are ordered and will be delivered just in time for our opening day which is this Saturday the 5th. We will be open to the public for the first time on Saturday from 10 to 7 and 12 to 5 on Sunday. We'd love to see some of you on that special day!!!
Most of you know us as African Cichlid people but our store will have way more then that. We will primarily be focusing on Cichlids in the beginning but in the spring we will be moving all of our breeder fish and babies into the warehouse which will free up about 70 tanks which we will use to expand into community fish and all kinds of oddballs and more fun stuff.
Just in case you are wondering our hours will be Fridays and Saturdays from 10-7 and Sundays from 12-5. We are still both working our full time jobs Mon-Thursday until the store takes off, hopefully that will be sooner rather then later but who knows.

The address is:
9254 Kings Highway
King George Va 22485.

I talked to the owner today and he informed me that the new location opens up this saturday and they will have hours Fridays Saturdays and Sundays.

They will not get community fish until this spring but will still have plenty of cichlids and some oddballs.

I'm heading up tomorrow to see their store. If anyone interested in riding along they are certainly welcome. Thought I would leave around 9 AM. PM me if you would like to go, and where we can meet.

I stopped KG Tropicals today and it was very nice! Lots of nice big cichlids to look at and they have an impressive set up for breeding and keep fry.

They carry lots of regular plecos as well as Bristle Nose and Albino Bristle Nose Plecos.

They also have great prices on angelfish. I would say hefty size 2" - 3" fish for $12.

Bettas looked good for $4-$5 and they also sell some plants (mainly swords) for $3-$5.

And some gorgeous discus for $30-$40. Well worth stopping in and I hope to see what spring time brings for community fish and business expansion.

I stopped by again today at KG Tropicals. I continue to be impressed with their operation. They did get in a few community fish, mainly some Dalmation Mollies, Juv. Tiger Barbs, Good looking Guppies, Serpae Tetra, and Rosey Barbs.

However, I am most impressed with Angelfish....ohh the angelfish! Very large, very good looking platinum, black, and even some koi angelfish for very reasonable prices.

I will try to remember to take my camera soon!

HI there! I'm new to the forums (first post actually) and just wanted to drop in to say that I will be heading over to KGTropical within the next week or so. I live in King George too and I just heard about your new store! My father saw the news article in the local paper and showed it to me. I'm really excited to see all your tanks! That is a LOT of tanks you bought LOL!!!

I don't keep African Ciclids... but I will still enjoy looking at your stock and checking out prices on supplies, etc. I keep mostly South American tropical fish: Rams, Angelfish, Tetras, Corys, Otos, etc.

Congratulations on your new store! That is something I have only dreamed about for a long time... so I'm eager to see your store to see how things are going.

Best wishes!

I just wanted to post a follow up. I visited KGTropicals about a week ago. I was really impressed by their operation and enthusiasm for the hobby. They have a LOT of tanks full of wonderful fish! I ended up buying a couple of BEAUTIFUL and very healthy German Blue Rams! I would highly recommend shopping from them and if you are not in the area, give them a call and place an order!

I will definitely shop there again!

I have been here 3X and have enjoyed watching things improve each visit! Talked with John about setting up my new 150 and bought some fish that were healthy and happy! Love the 240 cichlid display tank! Go visit!

I have been in there 3-4 times now, and I am also very pleased with their operation. The hand picked driftwood, the plants, the fish. I am really excited about the future of this store running at full capacity.

Stopped by KG Tropicals this afternoon because I heard there was a "big" shipment of good size, male Peacocks and Haps and was NOT disapponted!

John hooked me up with some beautiful fish including a big, bad to the bone Bucco Noto! Also added a Nyerii, BiColor 500, Red Shoulder, Lemon Jake, Flavescent, and sulfurhead and the were all 4"+ I believe - except the sulfurhead that I pulled out of the assorted tank for $9.99.

There were so many more to choose from but had to draw the line somewhere! Would have liked to have picked up a couple more of the male dolphins they have in stock too, maybe next time.

I saw the video! Thanks for posting this one.

If I lived close enough to KGTropicals to call it my LFS, this news would be a sad disappointment.  Looking at it from John and Lisa's point of view, though, I can definitely see why they have to go this route.  They need to be able to concentrate on filling orders and shipping.

What I'd like to know is - what use have they found for the warehouse?  The video on that cuts off just as they are about to tell us!  Cliff-hanger!

The fish store business is not easy. So many did not survive the years of a bad economy, the competition of the big box pet stores and online businesses. My hat goes off to all the owners of local fish stores. They must have a special niche to compete. I'm looking for one that supports local breeders. I believe local breeders will support it!

I wish KGTropicals the best of luck... clapping
