My tank description and other fish are listed in my signature below.

I am looking for a fish to add a little color, that doesnt mind being solitary, and whose adult length is under 6 inches. You got any ideas?

I love my german blue rams but they like a more established tank if you could wait a little after finishing your cycle. Also, what about adding a different color to your tiger barb school like green or albino?

How about increasing the size of your tetra and cory schools? I know that doesn't add color but those fish like to be in larger groups. They will become more active and provide you with more to look at.

Hmmm a solitare fish with color that will with stand a group of 10 tiger barbs....... would most likely be some sort of cichlid.

How about Thorichthys meeki (firemouth Cichlid) would deffintly add some color and would do fine solitare in a community setup. Max size is 6" though and you want something under 6"s

Cleithracara maronii (keyhole cichlid) is another awesome centerpeice fish these guys are under 6"s

either fish should be easy to get from any LFS in your area

Donald also made a great suggestion about larger schools or shoals of fish pretty cool to see a group of 20 fish all swimming together like they would in nature. I have always wanted a huge school of red nose rummy's

I do plan on adding more tetras to the tank to make those schools a little larger, and maybe 2 or 3 more cory cats. I may end up just leaving it at that, but I wanted to entertain the idea of a larger showpeice kind of fish.

Would those cichlids be non-aggressive in that kind of tank....would they try to eat the tetras?

IMO you have some semi agressive fish already. Your Barbs are notorius fin nippers and like to attack other fish with long flowing fins/tails, as well as fish that may be slow moving. Your Gourami can also show some aggressive tendancies as he gets larger, as do most sharks. You could add more Barbs which would be quite interesting, or perhaps some Rosy Barbs, Rummynose, Rose Tetras, and etc.
I believe it's going to be difficult to add a colorful solitary fish that won't get under 6" with the exception of the ones already mentioned above. In my experience, however, often times quick moving "nippers" like to attack a fish that they know are going to one day be bigger than them and compete for food or perhaps be able to turnaround and eat them instead.
With the size tank you have large groups of schooling shoal fish are very impressive show tanks.

Thanks for all the good advice.

I think I will boost the tetra population and keep it at that.

I agree with Ron.

Also, these fish are small now but they're going to get some size on them, and once you've got all adults I'd consider the tank pretty much fully stocked. The tiger barbs, especially, will get some size on them and tend to dominate.

If I may add, keep the tiger barbs in a large group like you have. That way they are more likely to be to busy chasing each to concern themselves with the other residents the aquarium.
