I know that typically fish farms and distributors are set up and only deal with whole sale and large lots of fish to pet stores. Here is my curiosity...

1. Are there any local (within 100 miles) fish farms or whole salers?

2. If you were to visit/tour the facility, do you know if they would be open to selling a fish or two and cut out the retailer?

I thought it may be a way to find some more rare and healthier fish while also saving some bucks.

All the US Tropical Fish Farms I am aware of are located in Florida.

There are a number of suppliers that import and then sell directly to the hobbyist. They generally have better selection and lower prices than retail.

There is a guy starting a business in the DC area. However he does not generally plan to be open to the public. He is making an exception to have an open house for the local fish clubs. He is taking over the contacts from Anubias Design.

There also are a couple discus breeder/importers in the Baltimore/DC area. One I know no longer allows tours.

Here is the wholesaler for a lot of the Local Fish Stores:

What is the definition of a fish farm?

Is it the number of different species you grow?

The quantity of fish you grow?

Is someone like Discus Hans considered a fish farm? I believe he's an importer of German Discus, but he also breeds Discus.

Because he is more specialized what is he considered (just curious)?

There are plenty of hobbyist who breed and grow fish in their own homes.

The home breeders might be a little more specfic in what they "grow": maybe they have different species of Plec's, or Discus, OR Apisto's, or Rams or Malwai's or South American's? You may not have 25 different species, but you may have a wide number within a genus. Mini fish farmers?

But anyway a fish farm visit might be pretty cool and if you travel far enough you might get to see this

My definition of a fish farm is a person or business that raises mass numbers of fish for the sole purpose of whole sale fish selling to retail stores.

For my purposes though, I was looking to find a large vareity of fresh water community fish.
