Here's an update on my 56 Column. Still under construction. I added some driftwood, sand, and very small Java Fern. Hoping to convert to all live plants as money, and ability to keep them alive progresses.

56 Gallon:

6 Hyphessobrycon rubrostigma – Bleeding Heart Tetras

5 Mikrogeophagus altispinosus – Bolivian Rams

5 Black Lace Angels

2 Blue Angels

5 Corydoras Juliis

3 Carnegiella strigata- Marble Hatchets

1 Java Fern

Pool filter sand

Looking great Ron!

Question: is that a dark blue background on the tank?... or is it the color of your wall?... I really like that dark blue color.

I am not 100% sure what Ron is using, but there is an inexpensive posterboard at Michaels that is a deep royal blue, but its metalic foil finish, so it gives a small reflection, and I liked the way it looked in my tank.

Thanks Tracey,
The background (double sided aquarium backing)is blue. I originally had the reverse side which is black, however, it looked great but I could not see the Black Lace Angels. Even with the dark blue background they are dark but the blue gives a little more contrast.

Never thought of using something like that. I may check it out

Great looking tank- that's an awesome piece of driftwood, and your water looks C L E A R... Do you have a shot of the tank from further back, so I can see how much it's actually a "column"? What are the tanks dimensions?

I also like that blue two sided aquarium backing- I put it on all three of my tanks. My next one I may do black (depending on the inhabitant).

Thanks for the update with great quality photos! ThumbsUp They really show off what you are doing with your landscape. Great piece of driftwood, too - I could use one like that. *lol*

I see you have the lacy form of Java fern; I believe that variety is called "Windelov."

That's looking really great, Ron! That is an awesome piece of driftwood, too - great centerpiece! Very Happy

Before too long I'll have some Crypts, Anubias and Java fern I can donate to the cause.

Thanks DL. The tank dimensions are 30" W X 18" D X 24" H. Here's a couple pics of the tank and stand. Room lighting hard to compensate for reflectios and glare, but did my best.

The last pic I used a flash and demonstrated my Alien Fish. Very rare and they only show up under very bright light...They were first discovered when they made the "Men in Black" movie. Flash also caused background to turn much lighter than actual. True blue color is closer to the first pic.

Very cool- thanks for posting. I've never seen an aquarium of those dimensions before- nice setup, very nice tank. I'm really warming up to the sand substrate- is that pool filter sand?

Thanks,

Yes I used pool filter sand which I was able to buy 100# for $11.95. Very clean stuff. I rinsed using Flippercons tip (old pillowcase and a 5 gal bucket). Only had to rinse about 3 times and had very little clouding when I filled the tank. It seems to be fairly easy to clean also. I use a Python, and although I have to be careful, I get very little sucked down the drain.

I am also a big fan of Black Beauty Blasting Sand. I originally started the tank with it. However, when I added the Black Lace Angels they were to hard to appreciate as they blended right in. I have BB in another tank with some juvie Yellow Labs and they really look awesome in there against the black. I find it even easier to clean then the PF sans.

Is this tank fully stocked? Did you add more live plants?

The tank is lovely! flower What a difference the live plants make!  Not that you didn't have a strong layout before - you did.  But it can't be denied that the live plants give an overall warmer and fresher impression.  I hope I'm expressing that right!

Did you add something to your stock?  Those bright orange flashes seem new to me.  Platies?

Thanks Deb, appreciate the kind words. I did add a couple more fish and sadly lost a few. I updated the post with correct stock list
