Scientific News.

Panaque maccus (Schaefer & Stewart, 1993) is now Panaqolus maccus.

According to several recently-published papers (a list of titles and authors can be found at http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=36038&p=246059&hilit=panaqolus#p246059 ), the popular clown pleco has been assigned to the newly-validated (2012) genus Panaqolus.

The recent research of Fisch-Muller, Montoya-Burgos, Le Bail, and Covain included a review of the genus Panaque and resulted in many small members of Panaque being moved to Panaqolus.

Newly-validated but not newly-erected, the genus Panaqolus has for years been regarded as a synonym of Panaque.  However, a new biological technique known as DNA Barcoding has helped establish that, aside from unusual dentition, the two have little in common and that, in fact, smaller members of Panaque have much more in common with members of Peckoltia.  Hobbyists, including me, are not surprised to hear this as we have seen Peckoltia and small Panaque confused many times, over the years.

The article, "Four new loricariid catfishes described from the Guiana Shield," published in the Jan/Feb 2012 issue of Amazonas magazine, gives more details.

The Panaqolus genus is quite useful to aquarist, because it helps differentiate between the Small/medium plecos such as Clown Plecos and L-204s and the larger Royal Pleco types.

Deb -

I really enjoy the Scientific News posts - genus alignment is fascinating and I love researching the topics you describe.

Any idea in what genus the smallest pleco species are found?

My first guess would be Otocinclus.  Some species of oto barely top an inch. Not only is the TL short, but they are a slim fish, too. Very Happy

Apparently the L-204 "Flash Pleco" was given a scientific name - Panaqolus albivermis.
